Nanjing: Part Three

"What are we doing today, again?"
"Hmmm... Wait I also forgot"
"Oh yeah! We're going to (insert name of destination/site here)!"
This is basically one of several conversations that characterized our trip.  We were constantly having to reevaluate Wikitravel and our plans based on how tired we were or what we felt like doing in relation to what we just did.  This was especially the case after we arrived in Shanghai (next post) when Ilya came down with a nasty (likely food related) illness.
Entrance to the ascent of Dr. Sun Yat Sen's Mausoleum.  The man is historically important in the lead-up to modern China in the early 20th century.

 Beautiful, isn't it?

 Almost there!

 SO CLOSE!

 Ok, here it is.

 The view from the top.

Looking inside the respected man's tomb.  Here's a statue of him.

Steak at the Italian restaurant that night (I think it was called Jack's Place.)

 Some coffeehouses in Nanjing.

The Confucius temple area lit up at night.

Ilya started to get sick at around this point.  Fast asleep.

 The infamous Zhongguomen.  Totally fortified.

These extensive walls and tunnels were capable of trapping intruders inside, and ambushing them by creating hiding places for defensive forces.

One of the stones used to build the wall.

A model of the city fortifications 700 years ago.

Atop the 700 year old walls.

 Overlooking the bridge to Zhongguomen.

A zen garden between two of the walls.

A nifty little bakery in the old part of the city.

 I love food.

There's one of the cats I mentioned earlier.  He would always sit there, his little ears sticking up, right where the cashier needs to stand to take your food orders.  He would stand there and constantly ask the owners for food because he knows they need to be there to take customer orders.  Smart.

Olivia and I would always make fun of this brand of snacks, characterized by a little girl who always looks constipated on the packaging.

Walking through the old city on our last night in Nanjing, Olivia and I stumbled upon a few city workers who were dealing with an absolutely gargantuan amount of garbage.  I do not envy them.  Tough job but someone's got to do it.  There's Olivia on the left.

The newer of the two Nanjing Railway Stations (this one is Nanjing Nan or Nanjing south).
